EMOTION SHIFT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave.
Our thinking influences the way we feel and that subsequently influences how we behave. Our behaviour directly affects how we live our lives and what choices we make. Challenging situations, events or relationships become problematic when they are perceived by the individual as a problem. A situation can be viewed by someone on a ‘good’ day as a normal event without any consequences but the same situation can evoke strong emotional disturbances if the person’s thinking has been distorted.

Understanding the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours is the first step towards change. CBT can assist to change behaviours, leading to alteration of one’s thinking and emotions. The cognitive therapeutic process starts with identification of dysfunctional thoughts which can then be evaluated before an attempt is made to change them. This modification of cognitions will result in a change of feeling, physical sensations and behaviour.
CBT focuses on dealing with problems in the present and also on their future prevention, however, an exploration of the past circumstances is useful to establish the origins of the problems. This also contributes to expansion of self-awareness.

What to expect from CBT sessions
Our first session will focus on finding out more about you and what brings you to therapy. We can then discuss your goals for therapy and the best ways to approach them.
A supportive, confidential and compassionate presence in the therapy room will aid you on your journey towards change. You will be listened to non-judgementally and will remain in control of your own therapeutic needs.
Working on some simple homework tasks outwith the session will also extend the opportunities for cognitive and behavioural change. The emphasis is on a collaborative therapeutic relationship that will maximise a positive progress.
Sessions last 50 minutes and the fee is £40. An initial 30 minutes long introduction session is free of charge.
Appointments cancelled within 24 hours are usually charged at the normal rate.
Depending on your problem difficulty the number of sessions will vary between 3 to 15, in some cases longer. We will usually meet on weekly basis but timing and frequency of the sessions is by mutual agreement.
